It can reach up to 3 meters in length and weigh as much as 680 kilograms.

These tunas prefer temperate and tropical waters and are formidable predators, feeding mainly on fish and invertebrates. They have a unique biology, including warm-bloodedness, allowing them to thrive in various environments. Atlantic Bluefin Tuna are known for their long migrations, which are essential for spawning.

The Bluefin Tuna is commonly found in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. These tunas inhabit a range of ocean depths, often diving to depths of over 1,000 meters in search of prey, though they are also known to frequent surface waters. Their habitat choice is influenced by the availability of food and the temperature of the water, with a preference for warmer surface temperatures during breeding.

Commercially, this species is highly valued, especially in Japan for sushi and sashimi.
